In middle school, St. Gertrude School students are offered many opportunities to pursue diverse academic and extracurricular interests.

LOGIC:

Studying the principles of correct reasoning helps students increase their ability to make cogent arguments and assess news/ideas. Students become familiar with the three acts of the mind – understanding, judgement, and reasoning – and the various issues related to each act. They also begin to consider some of the fundamental questions in philosophy through homework exercises and class discussion.
Required in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade

STEM ENRICHMENT:

While integrated throughout curriculum at all grade levels, in the 6th grade, students explore specifically the interconnected disciplines of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. This is taught in addition to the STEM curriculum.
Required in the 6th grade

MATH ENRICHMENT:

Students with an interest in math expand their understanding through real-world applications, project-based learning, and student discussions. This is taught in addition to the math curriculum.

HIGH SCHOOL TEST PREP:

A preparation course for the Catholic high school placement test (HSPT), students learn best practices for taking the test and regularly practice in an exam setting.
8th grade

ATRIUM:

The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is a Montessori-inspired learning environment for community, worship, and meaningful work. Students learn how to prepare the environment and plan lessons for younger children.
8th grade

TEACHERS ASSISTANT:

Students develop leadership skills and an understanding of the role of a teacher by assisting in younger grades.
7th & 8th grade

CREATIVE WRITING:

From character development to scene setting to theme development, students turn their inspirations into powerful stories.
7th & 8th grade

PAINTING:

Students develop drawing skills and create paintings using the mediums of acrylic, watercolor and oil paint.
7th & 8th grade

CERAMICS:

Art meets function as students learn basic hand-built techniques of coil, pinch, and slab building before advancing to the pottery wheel. All pieces are glazed and kiln fired.
7th & 8th grade

BASKETBALL OFFICIATING:

Students learn the rules and mechanics of officiating basketball. Player skills are improved as students learn the challenges of fairly assessing plays and understand what officials are looking for in a game situation.
7th & 8th grade

LACROSSE:

Students learn the rules and participate in drills to develop skills to play this ever-growing popular sport.

BACKYARD SPORTS AND FITNESS:

Students explore badminton, croquet, bocce ball, general wellness and fitness. This enrichment exposes students to sports they may not regularly play but can enjoy socially with family and friends.
